New ID cards

13-04-2010

On March 16, the government approved the draft legislation which is to change the Act on ID Cards and which is now to be debated by the Parliament. The draft legislation stipulates introduction of electronic ID cards which are to ensure safety of transactions made electronically. It has been proposed that Polish citizens should have a right to hold an ID card since their birth. The new solution will make it possible to verify children data in state registers, e.g. those related to education, health protection or social insurance. Moreover, children under 13 years of age will be able to stay in other EU and Schengen countries without passports.

It has been proposed that the new regulations on electronic ID cards should come into force at the beginning of 2011.
