With global carbon emissions recently climbing to record levels, the Danish government has big ambitions to become independent from fossils fuels by 2050. The government’s ‘Energy Strategy 2050’ setting out this transition, states that energy efficiency will play a critical role. After all saving energy will be a much cheaper option, than for example, building new wind turbines.
Currently between 40% to 50% of Danish energy usage is wasted, so efficient energy is something than can be introduced at all levels of society, from agriculture, business, transport, buildings to individual households. It is estimated that demand for energy in 2050 will be considerably higher than today, but through far-reaching energy efficiency improvements, could be supplied using a lower amount of energy.

Buildings are one of the biggest energy users; around 30% to 40% of Denmark’s total energy consumption is used for heating, ventilation and lighting. One of the tasks now is to renovate existing buildings, which can help prevent unnecessary energy waste. Simple and practical things can be checked and enhanced like the windows, the heating system or the insulation of the building.
Danish company Rockwool, one of the global market leaders in insulation, believe that the most sustainable energy is saved energy. Insulation has been proven to be a highly efficient way to reduce wasted energy loss and regarded as the first step to a climate-friendly building. Rockwool are committed to helping fight climate change, currently urging the European Union to increase its greenhouse gas reduction target from 20% to 30% by 2020, in order to drive low carbon investment.

Other Danish companies involved with energy efficiency include Velux, specialists in windows, blinds and solar panels on roofs, who are strongly committed to promoting climate neutral buildings and sustainable living. While one of Denmark’s ‘greenest’ companies Danfoss, is a global producer of components and solutions for refrigeration and air conditioning, heating and water and motion controls.
More efficient and cleaner technologies are the key to efficient energy use and Danish companies like Rockwool, Velux and Danfoss are at the forefront of this development to save energy and help reduce carbon emissions.
It is estimated that with the help of energy saving measures the Danes will be able to cut gross energy production by 6% in 2020, making Denmark one of the three most energy efficient countries in the world.
