*Innovation activities are all those scientific, technological, organisational, financial and commercial steps, including investment in new knowledge, which actually lead to, or are intended to lead to, the implementation of innovations. These activities may either be innovative in themselves, or required for the implementation of innovations. Also included are basic research activities that (by definition) are not directly related to the development of a specific innovation. Companies may have innovation activities in the period under review without having actually implemented an innovation.
