Radisson Collection Hotel, Warsaw: Hotel Environment Action Month (HEAM) in Radisson

4-10-2007

For many years, the sense of responsibility for the environment and community where Radisson SAS hotels operate has played an important part in the commitment to the sustainable development of the chain. Since 2001, these attempts have been enhanced and organised within the Responsible Business programme.

Traditionally, as every year, September was the month of the international informational campaign and special initiatives of Radisson SAS hotels within Responsible Business programme. The chain of Radisson SAS hotels from all over the world has been continuously supporting various social and charity actions. Therefore, during the last month we conducted various initiatives engaging our employees in environment protection and developing friendly relationships with local communities.

An important part of Responsible Business programme is the care for environment. The hotel chains from all over the world participated in the global Hotel Environment Action Month (HEAM) campaign. The programme was initiated by International Hotel Environment Initiative (IHEI), and aims at increasing the awareness of environmental and social issues amongst the employees and hotel guests. Below you will find the list of our Hotel Environment Action Month activities:

KRAKÓW – CO2-free day

As we informed, Rezidor Hotel Group has became a partner of the World Childhood Foundation. The hotels of the Group in EMEA region have undertaken initiatives supporting this Foundation. The organisation created in 1999 by the Swedish Queen Sylvia is aiming at bringing help to children of the streets, to children in childcare centres, and to young mothers from the high-risk groups. This global partnership is a next step of the Responsible Business Programme of the Rezidor Group started in 2001.

Throughout the whole September, at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Kraków we collected funds from selling so called Childhood Rooms. The rooms are situated at the sixth floor of the hotel. We had transferred 1 Euro to World Childhood Foundation for every night of accommodation sold in these rooms.

On 16 September, in cooperation with Aeris Futuro Foundation we had organised a special employee picnic "No for CO2 emissions".
During the meeting we calculated the amount of CO2 released to atmosphere by the employees on the way to the picnic. Then we expressed this amount by the number of trees that must have been planted in order to have neutralised the emissions to zero. Afterwards the trees were planted in the Babia Góra National Park.

Another initiative of Kraków’s hotel took place on 20 September. As part of the Clean up the World campaign the employees had tiden up the garden and planted the plants at our friendly Jan Brzechwa Children Home. Moreover, on 22 September, which was a “day without car”, we had been encouraging the hotel’s employees to use their bicycles or simply walk in order to minimise the CO2 emissions on that day.

SZCZECIN – in the bosom of nature
The campaign at Szczecin’s Radisson SAS hotel was performed on 20 September. Apart from the hotel’s employees it included the students from the Roman-Catholic Gymnasium, situated at Zawadzki-Klonowic housing estate. The participants accompanied by the Forest Guard went to tidy up the municipal forests. After a busy day they relaxed outdoor sitting around the bonfire and roasting sausages. The meeting was a fantastic opportunity to talk about how do we all understand the meaning of Responsible Business.

WARSZAWA – environment protection at the hotel
Some extraordinary educational meetings took place at Warsaw’s Radisson SAS Centrum hotel in the third and fourth week of September. The employees had been presenting the children from a friendly 220 Primary School in Warsaw, how such a large hotel facility works in an environmentally-friendly way. The workshops also included hotel’s employees. Everybody had a chance to see how various hotel equipment works and how do we attempt to operate in harmony with the environment. The meeting was complimented by the activities developing an environmental awareness. We had also organised a drawing competition and currently we are looking forward the results.
Additionally, throughout the whole September the employees of the hotel’s restaurants and reception desk had been collecting from the hotel guests for the World Childhood Foundation. The collection had been held during the morning check-outs of the guests on weekdays, at the reception desk and in both restaurants. The receptionists and hostesses wore special “Charity in Action” shirts. The information materials about the Foundation were placed in the hotel’s lobby and at the restaurant tables. In the restaurants the money for the Foundation was collected in special boxes. The guests that supported financially the Foundation had been awarded with the seeds of garden plants and fruits.
